My blog is called "Creative Smiles" because my designs are the result of incorporating mistakes. With fumble fingers that drop whatever they are holding - repeatedly, it takes a lot of giggles, smiles and creative patience during my crafting process. xx

Moving Along With the Times - Autumn Colors

Hello to all my friends - so grateful you are here. Wishing you all good health and happiness. Even though Florida does not experience Autumn as other areas do, we still enjoy the colors on our cards. We are still unusually humid (even for Florida standards) and have just begun enjoying temperatures in the 80s instead of the 90s!

It's time to share a Project for the new Moving Along With The Times Challenge!

Challenge #109's theme is ANYTHING GOES USING AUTUMN COLORS - for the next 2 weeks!

For these cards, I raided all my "old stuff" - and was it fun!

For the monochrome card, I heat set gold EP. A few colors of distress inks were applied in a resist technique for shading. To maintain "STRAIGHT" lines with the inks, I used a 1" mask. The decorative frame is gold glossy cardstock:

For some of the angles, a mask was used to keep the distressed coloring in straight lines:

Using multiple masks, I next colored using distress inks and finger daubers achieving a Fall colored, patch-work quilt look with the same stamp:

Coloring with Masks can be fun, creative and most of all, mistake-proof!

The masking was made easy by using 1-inch "post-it note" tape.
If you have never heard of it before - check it out. It's great for using in the frig, too, to date your left over (giggle).

Thanks for stopping by today!

Lovely Autumn Color theme at The Crazy Challenge!

Good Morning, sweet blogging friends!
I hope this finds you well and enjoying the season.

Today I am guest designing for a fun challenge blog called

THE CRAZY CHALLENGE.

(thank you for giving me this opportunity, Crazies!)

This fortnight's challenge is COLOR THEME #260.
So get your Pretty Autumn Colors out and join in the fun!

I'm playing with a masking technique, using "Post-it Tape" with this collage stamp. Manufactured by Rubber Cottage and purchased in 2005, it has only seen ink one time before. How NEGLECTFUL of me! (Isn't it a cool image?)

(click on the image below to enlarge)
Assorted inks were used (hybrid, pigment and dye base):

I embossed the background, sentiment, and around the leaves and acorn with Copper Kettle Cosmic Semi-Transparent EP. Because it is semi-transparent, the color changes depending on the colors behind it. For example, see the green leaf below, distressed with Citrus Green, Indian Gold, and Orange Blush Embellishment Mousse? The Copper EP changed to a pinker hue when touching the Orange Blush Mousse.

The versatile Autumnal Oak Die set is great because the leaves and acorn are actually two pieces, allowing for an assortment of techniques. For the acorn:

On the inside, I used the negative portion of leaves from the same die set, distressing with a little hybrid ink and Indian Gold Mousse:

Don't forget to upload your lovely Autumn creations to THE CRAZY CHALLENGE!

The Turquoise Snowman and Blog Candy

Hi, everyone! Here in central Florida we have been enjoying our usual April and May style weather all winter long. But Sunday and Monday mornings are supposed to be in the 30s, so here is a Snowman in hopes that we can enjoy some "more appropriate" seasonal temperatures.

In the meantime, I've become addicted to that Cloud Nine Velvet Glitter by Sparkle N Sprinkle, and cannot stop playing with it. Those who know me can attest that my "fumble fingers" find coloring difficult. But stamping and shading are so enjoyable on this glitter. You'll likely be tired of seeing how much I use this technique. My favorite way of coloring on this glitter is with a Dove Blender pen and watercolor crayons because they are so forgiving and extremely easy to blend. This card only has a slight dab of color.

To see this snowman's brother, please click here.

The three delicate snowflakes are from Impression Obsession's new die line.

The die cuts were cut from white cardstock, coated with VersaMark ink, and heat set with Sparkle N Sprinkle's glistening Cosmic Ice Rink embossing powder (EP408).

The easy techniques for using Velvet Glitters are found on the SNS Site:
Copics on Velvet Glitter - coloring on Glitter
Staz-on Ink and Velvet Glitter (several tips in one tutorial)
(and there are even more techniques for velvet glitter if you'd like to take a look!)

I stamped on top of the velvet glitter with Rubber Cottage's Snowman inked in Azure Blue Staz-on ink. The shading was accomplished by pulling the color off Lyra watercolor crayons with a Dove Blender Pen, and applying directly to the glitter. Easy to manage the color. Easy to blend and shade.

TIP: the Dove Blender allows you to control how much moisture gets on the glitter so the underlying adhesive is not affected.

The snow flake on the top right has been cut through to the center, so that part of it is behind the white layer, and part is in front, to create visual interest and depth.

The velvet glitter is applied with Super Adhesive Sheets (double sided hi-tac adhesive). Burnishing the velvet glitter onto the adhesive enlivens the glistening power.

BLOG CANDY: Three Sparkle N Sprinkle Stamp Sets to the winner whose name is pulled out of the hat. Just leave a comment stating what your favorite card colors are to use on a snowy card. If the winner's e-mail address is available through their blogger account, I will notify them, so you do not have to become a follower :-) Deadline is February 28.

The Lilac Snowman and Blog Candy

Blog Candy! Awarded January 11 to Amy#8546 of The Tigers Haven

Bloggers who have glitter running through their veins share something ELSE in common.

They lament that the sparkliness of their beloved glitter cannot be captured well in photography.

Alas, are you my Glitter Sister? Do you share the Sorrow?

Still, there is nothing which begins to match the enthusiastic, lively spirit of Glitter. So it makes me very happy that Cloud Nine Velvet Glitter by Sparkle N Sprinkle pleads with my other art supplies to include her in every card possible. In this case, my Lyra Watercolor Crayons heard Cloud Nine's cry, and asked to include her. So we all worked together to create this fun card.

The technique is found on the SNS Site:
Copics on Velvet Glitter - coloring on Glitter
Outline Stickers, Markers and Velvet Glitters
Staz-on Ink and Velvet Glitter (several tips in one tutorial)
Watercoloring on Velvet Glitter

I stamped on top of the velvet glitter with Rubber Cottage's Snowman inked in Ultramarine Staz-on ink. The shading was accomplished by pulling the color off Lyra watercolor crayons with a Dove Blender Pen, and applying directly to the glitter. Easy to manage the color, easy to apply the shading.

TIP: the Dove Blender allows you to control how much moisture gets on the glitter so the underlying adhesive is not affected.

So what does The Lilac Snowman have to do with Blog Candy? He wants to gift someone with three Sparkle N Sprinkle stamp sets. You don't have to follow my blog (though I love it when you do). Just leave a comment about why the Lilac Snowman is reveling in the gently falling snow, or catching snowflakes with his little snowy tongue. The winner will be announced here on January 11. If your e-mail addy is available through your comment or blogger, I will also contact you privately if your name is drawn from the basket. If no one responds within the week, then another name will be drawn.
