My blog is called "Creative Smiles" because my designs are the result of incorporating mistakes. With fumble fingers that drop whatever they are holding - repeatedly, it takes a lot of giggles, smiles and creative patience during my crafting process. xx

Dimensional Inchies on an Easel Card - and freebies

Hello, my friends! Hoping you are not uncomfortably dripping wet from the sweltering heat (here in the northern hemisphere) - I also hope that our friends Down Under are escaping the wrath of the current explosion of influenza cases. May you be well soon if the flu has come to your home.

Do you know what "inchies" are?

Before I became "house-bound", 20+ years ago, I had the pleasure of working in a brick and mortar store called THE PAPER PLAYHOUSE. There I taught classes and designed the free, weekly Make N Take, instructing about new products and how to use them. It was a great opportunity to meet people and enjoy our hobby!

Do you remember when...

In those days, designer paper was scarcely a "thing". So we stamped our own background papers, embellishing them with inks, glitters, embossing powders, etc. It was great fun cutting them for One Sheet Wonders or Inchies-Twinchies creations.

My card shares today involve some of the oldest designer papers of day - lovely K&Company designer paper, which was also VersaMark stamped with an Impression Obsession image and heat embossed with clear EP containing glitter, to give the paper some extra pizzazz.

First up are some "Just A Note" cards - with die from Sue Wilson Script collection. Cut once on white cardstock, a lavender glitter layer was attached - it has been adhered to vellum for a bit of texture and mystique.

I was inspired by a friend recently who took an "Inchies Class" involving 3-D appearing shadows without actual dimensional adhesives:

The ribbon, also 25 years old, was fed through a slit in the vellum:

Has this ever happened to you?

The "colored powder" of a die flaked off, onto the paper. It is deeply embedded in the white and is quite noticeable. It worsened with each pass through my Gemini Junior machine. If it happened to you, how did you remedy it? The folks at Creative Expressions told me to use wax paper, which Spellbinders always said not to do (at least when they were a new company) (you may have to click on the photo to enlarge it).

Two very special birthdays in blog land are soon coming!

I'm all set for them:

flat for mailing:

Also a little sentiment on the card backs, which I've included as a gift to you below:

LOST AND FOUND - MORE "unfinished stuff" from my old stash - freebie

I've been plugging away in my craft room, a little at a time and using more "stuff" discovered in my "unfinished projects" box. I love using my old stamps and papers from long ago. Do you?  Today, I am using previously cut out triangles of papers in the backgrounds of these cards.

I especially enjoy this Fred She Said stamp because it works for people from our past or present - still present in our lives, and/or having moved away until we next talk. I love hearing the stories about my friends' relatives and family stories. Those kinds of memories come alive when retold, and give us inspiration to live in a way that inspires others, too. On this occasion, the card was sent to a friend's husband who has been chronically ill, and fighting a terminal illness, for decades. His strength and influence have encouraged me. In the card, I shared that he and I are "aged to a perfection" only the two of us can appreciate (giggle).

Aged to Perfection - Fred She Said Old Trucks

Using the backgrounds from my unfinished box, with a little help from Fred She Said Old Trucks, I utilized an ancient (dare I say "vintage") technique. Some call it "Cracked Glass" and others call it "Cracked Ice".

Using Sepia tones to further the vintage look, I die cut the images, inked them up, coated with several layers of clear EP, and put them in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Then the images were "cracked" before the EP could thaw:

I liberally smooshed Black Soot DI on top of the images, so the ink could get into the crevices. The rest comes off easily with paper towel. These cracked really well -- kinda like me! (giggle)

I tried to capture more detail in the photograph by removing the overhead light on my desk:

March Beautiful Blossoms Challenge

It's so nice of you to drop by. I'm wishing you and yours all the best that Life can bring!

It's time for a new Challenge at Beautiful Blossoms

It is a fun "mood-board-inspired" monthly challenge which features Flowers as the main focus.

The Mood Board is a starting point, and your artwork is where your imagination takes you!

Details are on the blog. Hope to see you there!

I was inspired by the tulipspinks, and shades of green in this mood board.

Today's card is full of "oldies". Old stamps, mostly old inks, old techniques, even old paper! Maybe even "the Old" was inspired by the mood board with the retro pop coat in the bottom right. (smile)

Because this virginal stamp was inked with VersaFine Clair, an old, old technique was utilized to blend in the pink tones. Remember the Dove Blenders? That was used with Distress inkers. A Copic marker was lightly used to highlight the green tones. Easy and quick!

Looking forward to seeing how this month's mood board inspires you

at the Beautiful Blossoms Challenge.

Products: Stamping Up! Burlap Stamp (2017) and Early Spring (2003) sets - both NBUS, Distress Inks in Spun Sugar, Forest Moss, Mowed Lawn, Kitsch Flamingo (all years old), Dove Blender, Green Oasis & Verdant VersaFine Clair, Lightly used YG01 Copic, Sue Wilson Ornate Pierced Rectangles

Challenges I'm Playing In:

  1. Inspiration Station (March) Use mood board 3/31 (check 4/3)

   2. Colorful Options (March) colors of green 3/28

Inspiration Time at Beautiful Blossoms Challenge

Welcome, Blogging Friends! I'm so happy you are here! It was ALMOST more fun WRITING today's post, than it was to make the card - but I really laughed a lot through the makings of this project, and I hope you will laugh through the post.  YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY MY BLOG IS CALLED CREATIVE SMILES.
First things first: let me tell you about our new challenge blog:

Last month we kicked off a Brand New Challenge called Beautiful Blossoms .

It is a fun "mood-board-inspired" monthly challenge which features Flowers as the main focus.

The Mood Board is a starting point, and your artwork is where your imagination takes you! You do not have to follow the theme of the Mood Board, but you do need to use it as inspiration.

Details are on the blog. Hope to see you there!

I was inspired by the petals, pinks, and blue background in this mood board.

Have you ever had one of those projects where not one single thing works out as anticipated, yet STILL, you plug along, expecting the next step to cover up the problem, but then THE NEXT STEP becomes a problem, too? Until your whole project is one blunder after another?

Well, THAT is this card. NOTHING happened the way it was supposed to, AND that was after throwing away two-partially-colored and/or cut out items for this card! SIGH - and yet, I really did have fun making a  mess and playing with just about everything in my craft room. (What a mess to clean up afterward!)

I couldn't even take photos as I went along because it was one boo-boo after another, including:

  1.  throwing away two backgrounds
  2.  ruining the embossing powder,
  3.  refilling the Copic marker with the incorrect color reinker
  4. restarting from scratch,
  5. NOT ruining the EP the 2nd time,
  6. NOT using Copics the 2nd time,
  7. dropping the markers repeatedly on the card front
  8. warping my cardstock by spilling water on it (the SAME water I was using for cleaning my brush, so it WASN'T EVEN CLEAN WATER),
  9. dropping the card several times and TWICE rolling over the card front with my chair,
  10. having the super-duper adhesive stick my card front to the guillotine cutter because I had forgotten that I die cut a small hole in the back..
  11. and WHY would I do that? Because I had run out of pink cardstock for the sentiment.
  12. Picking a brad that would cover a mistake. Using a Copic on said brad to change the color, only to have my hand spasm and the color ended up on the sentiment. Went to look for a larger brad, and found one - it gaudies up my sentiment satisfactorily. LOL
DARE I GO ON?
Speaking of boo-boo's:

OKAY, OKAY -- Those are a few of my boo-boo's. I figured, at this point, no matter what I tried to do, blunders were GOING to occur, so I pressed on...

Jack came in and asked, "Is there anything I can do?" All I could do was laugh at that point, because he could see all the little piles in my room where I had each small boo-boo isolated to fix the mistakes.

At the VERY END, I almost glued the completed topper onto the card UPSIDE DOWN.

BUT I PERSEVERED AND WON!

sorta...

               kinda...

After ALL THAT,

wanna see what I made?  (giggle)

A Cardinal Christmas Wreath - Jan's Digi Stamps

December's Sale includes all 50 of Jan's Holiday Stamps, including the 2022 freebie!

Hello, my friends! May this find you well, and looking forward to the upcoming celebrations.

Today is the November kick-off Anything Goes Challenge at Jan's Digi Stamps!

If you use a JDS image in your card, please mention it. There is a 2nd draw specifically for those who use one of Jan's fun images.

Jan's images are easy to use because most of her sets embrace the same style, so they mix-and-match. Jan has a slightly vintage, slightly contemporary way of expressing her memories, and the enjoyable things of life.

The new Red Cardinals set is one that can be used all season long.

In this case I've combined it with her beautiful 2022 "freebie" set "Ornaments".

Each year, Jan's tradition is to gift the rest of us with a lovely new Christmas set to help jump-start our holiday card making.

Be watchful! They are limited editions, and disappear on Christmas Night in the year of their release!

Jan's "Banners and Bow" was created for celebrating.

She has provided both orange and red to encompass the holiday season, as well as the black-and-white version for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions.

To Make This Project:

First I created a "round ring" in my word processor.
Then I placed the cardinals-on-twig image from Red Cardinals onto the ring.
Select the long twig and small holly bunch repeatedly copying-and-pasting them around the ring. If your word processing doc allows, do a "select all" and "group" everything in place. Add the ribbon bow from the "Banners and Bow" set. Finally, place the sentiment from "Ornaments 2022" in the center. Make your wreath as full or as skinny as you like by adding more greenery (or even copying the entire wreath, making it slightly smaller then pasting atop the original wreath for a fuller look). Be sure to save your digital work in the same folder as your digital sets so you'll find it easily another time.
Below are the images I've used:

I must confess this is a "cheater" card. Jan's gorgeously precolored images were used, and then highlighted for additional depth:

Here is a simple card made using "my" wreath:

Who can resist a bit of sparkle?

Lots of dimension make this 5x7 creation extra festive:

Try playing with your free word processor if you don't have special software, to "layer" your digital projects. Once you've tried it, the technique becomes easier each time you play.

Don't forget to play in the Challenge!

Products Used:  Jan's Digi Images: Red Cardinals 4025 (new and on sale),  Banners and Bow 4015, AND the sentiment is from BEAUTIFUL FREEBIE SET "Ornaments 2022" (will be removed from the store on Christmas Day).     Dies: Sue Wilson Australian Collection "Melbourne" CED 8105, Memory Box Meridian Border 98134 (Copic Markers, Distress Ink, glitter paper, stash papers)

I'd like to play in the following Challenges please:

  1. World Wide Open Design Team Challenge #10 AG DT 11/15
  2. Pammie's Inkie Pinkies #2245 AG 11/14
