My blog is called "Creative Smiles" because my designs are the result of incorporating mistakes. With fumble fingers that drop whatever they are holding - repeatedly, it takes a lot of giggles, smiles and creative patience during my crafting process. xx

Serenity and Friends

Hello, sweet blogging friends! My versatile card today really is appropriate for nearly every occasion. A friend brought her Stampin' Up! stamps over, and I created the die cuts (etc) for a framed masterpiece. Together we came up with a beautiful card!

After die cutting SB Grand Decorative Labels One, I cut it in half to achieve two "border" pieces. I also cut a corner piece off to use on the top:

Each layer has distressed edges for a slightly vintage appearance, and added dimension.

Thanks for popping by today!

For new card makers - Directions to make the card:

  1. Cut card base for 5x7 card. Score at the 5" mark and fold in half.
  2. Place Spellbinders Grand Labels Four centered in a piece of card stock that is at least 5x7 and cut.
  3. Place Spellbinders Grand Dec Labels Four cut side down on top of the "frame" from step 2.
  4. Center the frame die so that the aperture is lined up at the four "points".
  5. Die Cut, then flip the base cut plate so that the die cut paper is still inside the die. Place the embossing mat on top (it seems like the die will cut through the embossing mat, but it does not). Then use your embossing plate on top of that, and run it through your die machine again. This will dry emboss the decorative die and bring out all the gorgeous details.
  6. Cut brown "mat" 3.75" x 5". Set aside.
  7. Cut white card for stamping 3.5" x 4.75".
  8. Stamp white piece as desired using favorite inks, leaving room for sentiment. Set aside for ink to dry.
  9. Choose a border punch, border die, or a die with decorative edges and just cut the edge of the die (that's what I did, using SB Grand Decorative Labels One).
  10. Adhere part of the border to the back of the brown layer so just the pretty part shows. Cut a smaller portion or corner for the center of the top, and adhere to same layer.
  11. Stamp sentiment to white panel and apply embossing powder. Heat Set.
  12. Distress edge of white stamped card with complementary ink colors, applying the lighter color first, and then the darker color on the very edge. Adhere to brown panel.
  13. If desired, die cut or punch some "grass-like" pieces for the bottom center, to create visual interest.
  14. Order in which to assemble:
        a) attach white decorative edges to brown panel.
        b) attach stamped white panel to brown panel.
        c) adhere panel from a&b to card base (centering top and bottom, and sides)
        d) adhere decorative frame panel.
        e) adhere grassy die cuts.

Products: Stamps: Stampin' Up!, Silver Fox Stamps "Always in my thoughts" (no longer in business), Impression Obsession B6061 Think of You Days, Dies: SB Grand Decorative Labels One, SB Grand Labels Four, SB 5x7 Elegant Labels 4, IO Die178C Small Grass, Inks: DI: tea dye and pumice stone, SU, VersaFine Clair, Clear Detail Embossing Powder (for sentiments)

May I please play in the following fine challenges?

By the Sea ATCs with Cardz 4 Galz

Hello, dear blogging friends!
I hope you are enjoying the beginning to the brand new year!
Seems almost like Sci-fy to say, "2017"!

It's time for a new Cardz 4 Galz challenge!

Badges are awarded for the Spotlight Winner and Top Picks.

Challenge #38 theme is selected by teamie Aly - ATCs - Artist Trading Cards!
You may have 3 separate submissions, and have as many ATCs as you like on each submission.

so get crafting and show us your delightful, colorful, mini creations!
Be sure to keep your ATC at 2.5" x 3.5", either landscape or portrait.
Challenge ends on January 18.

I've been stamping since 1989 and never made an ATC prior to this challenge!
Gulp! Please take a look at my team members' samples - they are incredible!

We are enjoying another warm winter, with record breaking temperatures, so it only seems fitting to use the beachy stamps in my stash:

Stamped with images from: Club Scrap Sand Dollar 2003, Magenta Leaves 09180-M, Netting "Me and Carrie Lou", Anna Griffin Greetings using Timber Brown Staz-on, and colored with Zig Markers which are so EASY TO USE - and well worth the investment!

The edges have been heat embossed with Magic Speckle EP175, assorted mixture of SNS EPs around edging, Nuvo Copper Gilding Flakes, as seen in this fun demo:

A little Mother of Pearl Nuvo Mousse was placed atop the star on the sand dollar, and 2 colors of glitters to the sea plants.

Apologies that the shiny elements "blur" the photos.

SU Touches of Texture, Inkadinkadoo Scallop Shell 97114-LL, Inkadinkadoo Flourish (around edge), and Anna Griffin Greetings using Stone Gray Staz-on, and Zig Markers. The same EPs were used around the edge. Then I distressed the EP by applying Nuvo Pen Glue randomly, and applying the Nuvo copper Gilding Flakers.

We Galz want to see all your fantastic mini creations!

KennyK Mermaid {Crafts Galore Encore}

Hello, sweet crafting friends!
Here's to Spring (giggle)!

While we have had a mild, unusually wet winter here, with only occasional freezes, the rest of you are ready for Spring. Maybe my blog header will hasten Mother Nature? Our azaleas are about bloomed out, the tulip tree has sprouted with pink magnificence, and the camellias are still prolific. Surely Spring is about to greet us?

On to Card Making!

The March challenge at Crafts Galore Encore is upon us already!

The Rules to the Challenge are so "painless"! (giggle)

Just create your project (using any crafting medium) according to this month's theme with up to 3 entries, and link your blog posts directly to the linky on the CGE Challenge site! That's it!

This month's challenge theme is oh-so-easy!

"Make a Card".

Our Sponsor this month is KennyK. There will be two challenge winners who get to choose 3 digital stamps of their choice from the KennyK Store! Please see the details for a special discount and contest available to all of the Crafts Galore Encore followers on our challenge blog post this month!

KennyK stamps are sent as beautiful PNG images. Today I'm featuring "Mermaid".
My little Mermaid has been splashing with the dolphins, enjoying a fantastic day!

I used the aluminum liner on a Planter's Peanut Container to die cut the shells:

Copic Markers provided a little color on the silver aluminum liner.

There are a number of Mermaid quotes on the internet. I've assembled several with a little editing and adding some of my own to make a fun sentiment on the inside!

Some paper layered sea shell die cuts, and a few tiny real sea shells, help set the stage:

Now it's your turn to play! All you need to do is create a card!

Possibilities {Path of Positivity Challenge #17}

Note: for Edith updates, please click here.

Greetings to my SWEET followers, and to Sue (Graceful Greyhounds) and Lynn (my newest google followers!) Thank you for dropping by.
This month I am "guest designing" for the Path of Positivity Challenge which lasts from August 4 until August 31, when voting will take place.

The POSSIBILITIES theme is Perfect Timing for me! These past 2 months I have made several lifestyle changes and some difficult decisions to allow new possibilities into my life.

The sponsors and prizes for this challenge are:
  • Two images (or three if you use a TSB image on your creation) from The Stamping Boutique, our guest sponsors this month, for the post or project that the DT deems most inspiring of the bunch.
  • Three digital images from Ike's Art for a person chosen in a random draw based on all entrants.
  • One digital image from Creative Bug Digital Stamps for each person chosen as a DT Delight.
There will also  be:
  • One digital designer paper (made to order in a few different ways) from Décosse's Dynamite Doodles for one lucky voter who leaves a comment.
  • One digital sentiment for every single person who enters the challenge.

Today I have two card shares using the same image:

This month's PoP sponsor is The Stamping Boutique. They designed this wonderful "Escape the Tower" image (from their Enchantment Line) to remind us that --
we all need to escape the towers of our existence from time to time
* and *
to renew our appreciation of what is right in our own backyards.
The past two months I've been doing just that,
and falling in love all over again with the beauty of my "little existence".

Possibilities

What are they? They all mean something different to each of us, and depending on our outlook, we might view them as cumbersome. I try to view Possibilities (and/or challenges) as something which might make me a better individual.

Sometimes it can be overwhelming - so many opportunities and possibilities - which one is the right one?

At the end of a recent Twilight Zone program a man responded to his accusing and angry son, "I don't have the words, but it doesn't mean I don't have the feelings".

Possibilities - when it comes to relationships, we sometimes take things too personally and become defensive or harbor unhealthy feelings. But the truth is - the Real Possibility is - that the person we are most concerned about is dealing with some harsh issues in their own way. Of course, the same is true for ourselves. We can only do our best, and not allow old and negative feelings, or reinforced past behavior patterns, to dictate what we should or should not do.

The "Possibility" exists that other people are having a bad day, or perhaps they don't know how to properly communicate, or maybe they only know how to lash out, rather than think before they speak. Perhaps my "hurt feelings" are nothing more than the result of another person's not being able to interact and behave in a healthy manner. THESE POSSIBILITIES open new doors, and allow us to make choices on how to go forward.

Like the man from the Twilight Zone quote above... the son felt that his father did not love him, did not approve of him, did not care about him, because the father never spoke his feelings aloud. However, the father was always there for his son, helping to pick up pieces, helping his son make good choices... but the son took the lack of verbally-skilled communications to mean that his father did not care, and did not love him. Hence the father's response:  "I don't have the words, but it doesn't mean I don't have the feelings".

So my wish for all of us is:
  • to embrace the Possibilities in our lives
  • try always to do our best in Recognizing the Possibilities
  • to realize that others may or may not encourage us in our adventure.
  • to journey in Life, seeing all the Possibilities we can
  • to recognize that we are not "locked in a tower" (as my cards show). Those Towers are largely of our own making.
Do you have any Towers you can Escape in order to better see The Wondrous Possibilities in your Life?

Here my easel card is closed (The fairy loves the light coming from the window of the tower as well as the moon!)

Now the card is open, to view just the sentiment.
To see my tutorial for how to use parts of an artist's image (digital masking) to create a cohesively themed card, please click here.

The dolphins are a retired Spellbinders die, (popped up) and covered with SNS embossing powder.
The clouds and moon were printed a second time, cut out, and popped up to create the "stop" for the easel. The frolicking dolphins are "flipped" in the bottom panel to create visual interest (notice the moon also faces a different direction). To see how to use the artist's images to create a theme, please visit my tutorial here.
(see? possibilities even reveal themselves in our card art) (giggle)

A Close Up:

 Fully Opened:

Same image, but colored with more green tones in the ocean and layered on an apricot colored background:

The sand-textured tower is created with Mudd Puddles (it's the first time I used this product and it really is VERY user friendly). The "netting ribbon" was applied by hand stitching through the yellow layer. Shells are adhered with 3D Crystal Lacquer. (I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly this dried in our oh-so-humid environment!)

Size A8 card with identical sentiment:

Below is a close up of the pretty Princess Rose Cosmic Embossing Powder - It is creamy-pearly-glittery (is that a good word?).  Velvet Sparkle Embossing Powder was applied around the inky distressed areas with a VersaMarker and then heat set. In real life, it is very sparkly, and not as "bumpy" as our regular Sparkle EP. My Mermaid's "fins" are textured with it as well.

All of the sparkle is exclusively accomplished with embossing powders.
It will not rub off and helps create "depth" with color.

I apologize for not better capturing the amazing Sparkle.

For the last week
SOMEONE sent down a bunch of NORTHERN winter weather, which has blotted out the Sunshine we are so well known for here in Florida!
(giggle) We are such wimps down here.
"Distressing" with EPs covers up mistakes and is lovely in person.

more sparkle:
My computer-generated sentiment uses GarineldonNo01 font (an on-line freebie). The letters resemble a moving ocean.

Just Dreamin'... (and blog candy)

Let's go sailing - with the wind in our hair, and the fresh smell of the ocean filling our lungs, I can almost feel it...

This will be our journey on a fantasy sail boat. Wanna come?

I've been cleaning out and reorganizing my craft room, including some of the older boxes stuffed way in the back that were housing... who knows what?

In cleaning out one box (novel idea, yes?) "a something" which had been die cut and covered with SuperAdhesiveSheets was discovered.

So I peeled away the protective covering to see what the image was. It was this fantasy, stained-glass sail boat from Sparkle N Sprinkle colored with Prisma Color pencils. Immediately I covered the now ultra-tacky surface with those tiny little clear beads everyone has in their stash. That took care of the exposed ultra sticky stuff.

Now what? Should I just throw the thing away?

As long as the ride is a fantasy, I experimented with a few techniques, once again allowing my distraction to keep me from finishing the task at hand -- to clean and reorganize the craft room.

Are you easily distracted, too?

(Can you see the little beads covering the sail boat image?)

Here, maybe this photo is better:

 First...

Using my old stash of virginal supplies, (hanging head in shame) I broke out:

Spellbinders Grands Big Scallop Ovals, and Big Scallop Ovals Nesties
Adirondack Lights Salmon (still had the wrapping on it)
My Mind's Eye Twine (still in the wrapping)
Brass Sea Horse Charm (still in the wrapping)

Colors and Layers:

It's fun finally using goodies purchased so long ago.

(the rest of the products are listed at the bottom of this post)

BUT BUT BUT - then, here is something new!

Will you come Dream Away with me as we sail?

Wonderful dreamy sentiment including phrases which allow us to sail away into the past, present or future:
"Cherish yesterday, Live today, Dream for tomorrow"

The sentiment is on this beautiful new Spring Florals set currently on sale at SNS.

A little about creating the dimensional glitter panel for this card:

Using white cardstock (CS), cut a panel with a fantasy scalloped "port hole".

Another "ring" of scallops was die cut from yellow CS. Because the glitters are semi-transparent, the yellow panel slightly shows though.

The yellow scallop ring was glued onto the white CS to create a tad of color and lots of dimension.

With Brushable Glue paint a ray of glue across the white and yellow panels and coat with Sunny Daze glitter.

Leave a space, and paint another ray, covering it with Sunny Daze glitter, and so forth. Allow to dry thoroughly, then go back and paint rays for the Orange Crush glitter in the spaces left between.)

Tip: hold the handle of your paint brush between your teeth while applying glitter between brushing the glue stripes (LOL)

Tip: have coffee filters available to catch the excess glitter. Very easy to pour back into jar.

Once dry, apply brushable glue to inner port hole and sprinkle on the Laser Blue glitter.

Customizing the charm: Lightly paint seahorse charm with Versamarker so the brass metallic essence will still shine through. If it is completely coated with VersaMark, then the EP will also cover all the brass. Apply By The Lake embossing powder (this glittery, pearly EP is awesome). Heat set. Stamp sentiment with same EP and heat. Smoosh white CS with VersaMark ink and apply matching embossing powder. Punch out scallop circle from that swatch. Assemble card.

Here is a close up of the textures and layers:

The best part of this card is the dreamy sailing trip with you, my dear blogging friends.

So where is the blog candy? Three Sparkle N Sprinkle stamp sets to the winner whose name is pulled out of the hat (because I have not figured out random.org yet). Just leave a comment answering the question about getting distracted: When in your craft room, regardless of what you are doing, do you sometimes become distracted, putting off another project already begun? If the winner's e-mail address is available through their blogger account or left in the comment, or even e-mailed to me, I will notify them, so you do not have to become a follower. Just have fun! Deadline is March 31.

Note: winner was announced on April 1 here, it is Cammy.
