My blog is called "Creative Smiles" because my designs are the result of incorporating mistakes. With fumble fingers that drop whatever they are holding - repeatedly, it takes a lot of giggles, smiles and creative patience during my crafting process. xx

Playing in CAS mix-up with alcohol ink and vellum

Greetings, friends! I've always wanted to play in the CAS MIXUP Challenge Blog, but shy away from CAS cards because I just have trouble making them. So I took the time to make a card specifically using their displayed techniques. It's a great challenge because new technique tutorials are shared with links to an assortment of ways to play along.

AND the design team shares absolutely fantastic samples!

This time the technique is alcohol inks on vellum. My AIs are a good 15-20 years old. I learned the hard way that even solvent products which have been carefully stored, may not have THAT long a self life! Still, where there is a will, there is a way.

CAS MIXUP Challenge Blog suggested Video Tutorials:

Alcohol Inks on Vellum using straws (Emelie Hessler - 6:34)
Alcohol Markers on Vellum (Melanie Muenchinger - 12:19)
Copic Coloring on Vellum (Jessica Frost-Ballas - 5:27)

To make my wonky frame out of glossy cardstock, I used two dies from Sue Wilson's Pierced Noble collection:

Then I used AIs (listed below) on PRINTED VELLUM (see the tiny white flowers showing through the alcohol inks?)

The die cut and frame are both from glossy white cardstock for a polished look. I hope this is considered CAS. It certainly is for me! (giggle)

The "Resting Butterfly" die is years old, but never used. So glad to play with it!

Treasures at Inspiration Station and a freebie

Hello, Blogging Friends! Today we have a new Challenge happening at:

Inspiration Station

NOT just "another" inspiration board.
It's entirely YOUR take as to what inspires you -
it could be emotional, thematic, color, texture.
What ignites your imagination today?

My memories wandered back to childhood days of warm sand, foaming ocean waves, and treasured shell hunts:

Stamped with VersaFine Clair Nocturne and heat set with clear detail EP, this shell collection was from a NBUS Inkadinkadoo wood mount Stamp from our local stamp store that went out of business in 2005. Using a blender pen and daubers, Pumice Stone, Black Soot, and Old Paper DIs were used.

Love all the shine in the embossing powder, making the shells and sand look wet.

Please join us this fortnight with your inspiration piece - remember, it's not just an "inspiration board". It's a board that inspires you in any way - emotionally, colors, themes, textures - whatever moves you!

Products:
Inkadinkadoo Sea Shells, Digital Sentiment, Clear EP, Nocturne Versafine Clair, Old Paper-Black Soot-Pumice Stone DI, Blender Pen, brads, vellum, white, black and kraft paper.
Dies: Sue Wilson Noble Ornate Pierced Design Dies.

My gift to you:

Please do not sell the Sentiment, but please Use on any of your projects, including projects involving any design teams you might be on.

Click on the image to bring it to full size. Because of the changes Google made, your image will appear to be solid black. Don’t panic. Right click and do a SAVE. Once it is saved on your hard drive, you can open it and it will have a transparent background. I create PNGs instead of JPGs so they can be placed anywhere on a scene or project, and so backgrounds can be made using them. Please let me know if you have any problems. I hope it serves you well!

Enjoy!

Challenges I'd like to play in please:
  1. NBUS #28 Never Before Used Schtuff - my Inkadinkadoo stamp and the printed vellum 8/1 (comment on 3)

Inspiration Station's "BE KIND" board and freebies

Hello, blogging friends!

You are cordially invited to play in the latest challenge at

Inspiration Station

NOT just "another" inspiration board.
It's entirely YOUR take as to what inspires you -
it could be emotional, thematic, color, texture.
What ignites your imagination today?

My imagination immediately flew to KIND FRIENDS, such as yourselves.

I am inspired by the words and monochrome technique. The first card has two butterflies. They are covering up boo-boos from where I dropped my ink:

The next is my favorite. The white frame is popped up, and woven with pretty lavender satin ribbon:

Next is some thinner, dark purple satin ribbon woven around the frame:

Finally, I punched out a white glitter butterfly and colored it with purple copic markers to customize the look. You can also color the bodies and edges for dimension:

Interior:

Come on over and share what you are inspired to make!

My gift to you - A sentiment for use on the inside or outside of your projects. Please do not sell the Sentiment. Use on any of your projects, including projects involving any design teams you might be on.

Once it is saved on your hard drive, you can open it and it will have a transparent background. I create PNGs instead of JPGs so they can be placed anywhere on a scene or project, and so backgrounds can be made using them. Please let me know if you have any problems. I hope they serve you well!

This option is great for a card interior:

This option is better for centering in a die for a card front:

Subscribe by Email

Greetings to my Blogging Followers!

Like many others, I have switched to "follow.it" as my choice of "subscribe by email", since Feedburner is no longer offering the service.  The people at follow.it were extremely pleasant and helpful, even though I opted for the free service. They even moved most of my followers over when I emailed the list of email addresses to import.

The major difference you will see is in the "from" section of the emails, which will now say "follow.it" instead of Creative Smiles.

I hope you don't mind that I've done that on your behalf. Please know how important your comments are to me. My life is very "little" since being homebound the last 20 years, and I treasure your kind friendships.

If you prefer to follow by email, and don't already receive emails from my blog, please visit my blog, and look in the right side bar. Scroll to the 4th item in the sidebar, and enter your email address. Thank you so much!

Now, for my poor Hoya Carnosa (Hindu Rope). Unfortunately, last Autumn it was in the way of some (supposedly plant friendly) overspray from the roof, and has some yellow streaks now. But check out the blooms. The plant also scales upward another 6 feet in addition to the hanging portion. The blooms are velvety soft when they open, but look like hard wax while closed:

Wishing you all the best this summer (and winter for my "Down Under" buddies!
hugs,
