My blog is called "Creative Smiles" because my designs are the result of incorporating mistakes. With fumble fingers that drop whatever they are holding - repeatedly, it takes a lot of giggles, smiles and creative patience during my crafting process. xx

Just Dreamin'... (and blog candy)

Let's go sailing - with the wind in our hair, and the fresh smell of the ocean filling our lungs, I can almost feel it...

This will be our journey on a fantasy sail boat. Wanna come?

I've been cleaning out and reorganizing my craft room, including some of the older boxes stuffed way in the back that were housing... who knows what?

In cleaning out one box (novel idea, yes?) "a something" which had been die cut and covered with SuperAdhesiveSheets was discovered.

So I peeled away the protective covering to see what the image was. It was this fantasy, stained-glass sail boat from Sparkle N Sprinkle colored with Prisma Color pencils. Immediately I covered the now ultra-tacky surface with those tiny little clear beads everyone has in their stash. That took care of the exposed ultra sticky stuff.

Now what? Should I just throw the thing away?

As long as the ride is a fantasy, I experimented with a few techniques, once again allowing my distraction to keep me from finishing the task at hand -- to clean and reorganize the craft room.

Are you easily distracted, too?

(Can you see the little beads covering the sail boat image?)

Here, maybe this photo is better:

 First...

Using my old stash of virginal supplies, (hanging head in shame) I broke out:

Spellbinders Grands Big Scallop Ovals, and Big Scallop Ovals Nesties
Adirondack Lights Salmon (still had the wrapping on it)
My Mind's Eye Twine (still in the wrapping)
Brass Sea Horse Charm (still in the wrapping)

Colors and Layers:

It's fun finally using goodies purchased so long ago.

(the rest of the products are listed at the bottom of this post)

BUT BUT BUT - then, here is something new!

Will you come Dream Away with me as we sail?

Wonderful dreamy sentiment including phrases which allow us to sail away into the past, present or future:
"Cherish yesterday, Live today, Dream for tomorrow"

The sentiment is on this beautiful new Spring Florals set currently on sale at SNS.

A little about creating the dimensional glitter panel for this card:

Using white cardstock (CS), cut a panel with a fantasy scalloped "port hole".

Another "ring" of scallops was die cut from yellow CS. Because the glitters are semi-transparent, the yellow panel slightly shows though.

The yellow scallop ring was glued onto the white CS to create a tad of color and lots of dimension.

With Brushable Glue paint a ray of glue across the white and yellow panels and coat with Sunny Daze glitter.

Leave a space, and paint another ray, covering it with Sunny Daze glitter, and so forth. Allow to dry thoroughly, then go back and paint rays for the Orange Crush glitter in the spaces left between.)

Tip: hold the handle of your paint brush between your teeth while applying glitter between brushing the glue stripes (LOL)

Tip: have coffee filters available to catch the excess glitter. Very easy to pour back into jar.

Once dry, apply brushable glue to inner port hole and sprinkle on the Laser Blue glitter.

Customizing the charm: Lightly paint seahorse charm with Versamarker so the brass metallic essence will still shine through. If it is completely coated with VersaMark, then the EP will also cover all the brass. Apply By The Lake embossing powder (this glittery, pearly EP is awesome). Heat set. Stamp sentiment with same EP and heat. Smoosh white CS with VersaMark ink and apply matching embossing powder. Punch out scallop circle from that swatch. Assemble card.

Here is a close up of the textures and layers:

The best part of this card is the dreamy sailing trip with you, my dear blogging friends.

So where is the blog candy? Three Sparkle N Sprinkle stamp sets to the winner whose name is pulled out of the hat (because I have not figured out random.org yet). Just leave a comment answering the question about getting distracted: When in your craft room, regardless of what you are doing, do you sometimes become distracted, putting off another project already begun? If the winner's e-mail address is available through their blogger account or left in the comment, or even e-mailed to me, I will notify them, so you do not have to become a follower. Just have fun! Deadline is March 31.

Note: winner was announced on April 1 here, it is Cammy.

That was a wonderful "find" and you implemented it into a fantastic creation filled with beauty and fun colors. Of course....I am always getting distracted when I am organizing, cleaning and purging. And, like you, I usually find some inspiration along the way and have to stay awhile and naturally play. But that is all part of the fun of being creative souls I think. Again, what a beauty of a card you made. Those beads look wonderful!

Wow De, this is just the most gorgeous card I have seen with those little bittie beads...you are so clever doing this and yes I will sail away into the sunset...on my hubby catamaran_ I wish_ see now onto the distraction. I get onto a card then a message comes through with a new email and I just have to look at my 'friends' card and comment and then I go onto other bloggers and see their cards and by the end of all of that, an hour or so later, I think "oh blow, the deadline for the challenge has now ended and my card is still sitting there unfinished"...due to the distraction...luv annie

Wow Donna, what an amazing & gorgeous creation! The stripes of glitter compliment the sale boat so well. You sure put a lot into your great post with all technique descriptions. The beads are fabulous and I love the idea of using coffee filters to catch glitter etc. (will have to buy some, I don't drink coffee:) ... I will bookmark this post to come back!

Oh Yes I get distracted in my craft room, I'll start on a project completely not what I had planned, my cats will come to get attention and I get distracted by beautiful blog posts like this one ! Cheers, Shirleyxx

I swear you do glitter better than anyone else I know, Donna. This is amazing! Fantastic work with the microbeads. I have a bunch of those and haven't used them but I'm going to be digging out my super adhesive sheets and doing something with them now. I love all the tips you gave in this, especially the idea of using EP on a charm. I never would have thought of that! The other oh-so-valuable tip was about holding the paint brush handle between our teeth. How would I ever manage without that one?
Now, do I ever get distracted? Ummm, ahh, ... what was the question? I missed it because a scrap of CS started shouting at me to use it up! :-D

Brenda said...

Where do you see ugly with this, my friend! It's stunning as always :) Love the bright colors - makes me want to sail away into the sunset :)

Dawn said...

Now, I would have thought that this beauty was actually a part of the cleaning up process...after all, you had to find a new spot to 'store' the sail boat and the rest of that unused stash ;) I love the rays you created with the glitter and the bright, warm colours. The embossing on the sea horse looks amazing too.

If not for the last minute, I don't think I would get anything done. Blogger is a huge distraction, and I thoroughly enjoy it. Once I start on a crafting project though I am pretty focused. BUT, let me tell you, when it comes to cleaning, absolutely anything could distract me! lol

Hugs, Dawn

Hi Donna,
I love the microbeads, it makes it look like I am watching the sailboat from a stained glass window. The colors that you've chosen are so happy. It makes me feel like I am ....watching the sailboat from a stained glass window...on a sunny day. :) I will have to try out your tip of hold a paintbrush between my teeth when I am performing a task next time!(Does it work as well on cleaninig the house?) You are such a character, albeit a creative one, but nevertheless a character. I just love how you are always so happy and fun-loving. :) We all need more of you around and to influence that "happiness" into us.

Very nice card, Donna. Yes, I get easily distracted, and sometimes start a project while I'm in the middle of something, just because I want to do it while it's fresh in my mind. That's not always a bad thing, because it gives me more time to think about the first project and sometimes I change that up as well. I also get easily bored, which is why I can't make multiples of a card. One or two is fine, but more than that and it's game over. :-)

Andrea W said...

Love all the sparkle and terrific colors. To answer your question, it is usually my husband who distracts me from my craft room. He's always wanting me to come look at something or find something he misplaced. I do finish my projects when I settle back into them, but sometimes they end up looking completely different than originally planned. Have a great day!

Donna,

Thanks so much for visiting my blog (Bleary-Eyed Crafts) and for your lovely words!

This card is amazing! I love the colors and the mix of materials.

And yes, I do get distracted. My craft "room" is my dining area, so I'm always looking at the dirty dishes I should be washing instead of crafting. :)

Heather B said...

Wow, where to start? First of all, BOXES of supplies? You're going to be visiting us for awhile! Secondly, I love that cool sailboat. Very neat. The shaped card is perfect for it. Thanks for playing with us at Use It Tuesday and don't forget about us when you dig into those boxes again!

This turned out fabulous Donna!! The colors & coloring is just stunning! And I LOVE how the boat looks with the beads on it (of course the gorgeous coloring underneath the beads really amplify that beautiful look!) Just gorgeous all around!
And congrats on breaking open all the new stuff - I think we all need to take time to do that more often;-)

How did I miss this??!! This is absolutely FANTASTIC! I'm such a glitter hound that this work of art just makes me swoon. SOOO gorgeous. I don't know which I like (love!) better - all the glitter and sparkle, or the fact that you show lots of close ups. I LOVE getting up close and personal to beautiful art, and your pictures give me the fix I need. This is absolutely breathtaking on so many levels. You are a true artist. And yes, I get distracted in my craft room all the time, usually by something shiny and glittery. Ha! Thanks so much for this beautiful piece - am saving it to my faves RIGHT NOW!

Donna, I too get distracted and yes I find half finished projects from time to time. LOL It's fun to finally finish them or to find another use for the project. Your sailboat is just fabulous!! Love all the glitter you used and the beads, WOW what a great addition to the center of the card.Your seahorse ties in perfectly with the sailing/at the sea theme. I am so glad you found this and finished it.Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful gem!!

Distracted? In my craft room? I go looking for something knowing it is in the next hiding place or under something else. I find stamped images, a wayward die cut, or some card starters and POOF! There's another pile of "wanna do's". Does everyone have a "wanna do" pile, I wonder. Good ideas that never quite made it to the finished stage? Sometimes I put several things I think might work together into a ziploc bag and put it in my craft tote to take to a stamping group or in my luggage to take on a trip with adhesive. I have even been known to send them to a friend as a "kit challenge" for them to assemble so at least they have a new home.....

Oh, yes, I have bunches of those beads in lots of colors. What a dazzlingly, beautiful, brilliant, fabulous card this is! Love how you dressed up the seahorse charm, too. You do have fun with your stamping, just as it should be. Love to see it! It's impossible to not get distracted in your stamp room, isn't it? I'll be looking for one thing, come across something else, start playng with it, notice how much time has gone by, realize I still need to finish the original project but now it's too late, and consequently I've finished nothing and it's time to cook dinner. Distracted, for sure!

Annelies said...

Lovely card Donna! I must admit I'm easily distracted. It used to be like this when I studied and it hasn't changed. So when I'm crafting it takes a long time before I can finish a card or layout. Greetings from Belgium, Annelies

Love this card and now have Brushable Glue on my wish list! I've been doing further thinking on this distraction issue. I am pointing a loving finger at my DH as well. He will ask a question or need something, and then when I head back to the craft area, the idea might have gotten lost. Love him dearly and always will! And, of course, the card or quest is not as important as DH.

Donna, I think distracted is my middle name. I have been trying to organize and clean up my craft table for 2 weeks so I can remove the Christmas table cloth and replace it with something springy. I have found so many partially finished cards I could spend a week just completing. So I am sticking everything in a box. This is a very bad idea because I just uncovered the box I stuck everything in when I cleaned the table off in Nov. to put the Christmas table cloth on! There's even more unfinished stuff in there!
Hugs, to you Donna!

Beautiful card Donna. Love the beads.

Do I get distracted while in the craftroom? Always. Especially with all the cool projects people are coming up with on blogland I cant help but check them out and sometimes trying their techniques. So pieces I'm in the middle of often get pushed aside - for a while.

Thanks for a chance to win some yummy candy. Should I be the lucky winner, please feel free to leave me a message on my blog as I always check them and get notified by email. Smiles, Phi

Yes, I too get distracted. I should be doing housework right now but decided to come on blogger and see what was happening. One hour later, I am still here. Will have to get back to it after this post though, the dog needs walking. I think he's given up on me. Take care. Wendy H xx
